1977 Ducati 900 SS

Background Info From Owner:
I have owned this 900SS since 1981. It was purchased in Austin,
Texas from an individual. At the time of purchase, it had no
fairing and it had the factory speed kit installed, high pipes,
40mm DellOrto’s, and the Imola cams. I sourced another factory
fairing that was silver with blue stripes, and a Gustaffson
windscreen. The bike had no neutral light switch or cam, and I
never replaced it. It had no turn signals, and the rear fender
was trimmed off where it had cracked, like they all do, at the
taillight mount. The taillight was mounted on the rear fender
mount bolts behind the seat, with a custom mount.
Over the years, I replaced the brake lines with stainless lines,
and replaced the ignition since it started running on one
cylinder only. It has a Sachse ignition, installed at overhaul.
The original cases stamped "DM860 087140" had porous castings
and wept oil, so a good second hand set of earlier 860 cases
were used for the rebuild. I also replaced the factory race pipes with a Gianelli two into
one pipe that actually has a baffle, so I could ride it on the
street, legally! LOL! I rode it quite a bit with the high pipes,
sure sounded and ran good!! I have ridden the bike approximately
8,500 miles out of the 11,592 showing on the speed-o.
The rod bearings gave up like most of the bevels do when ridden
a lot, and the bike sat for about 14 years, until I scraped up
enough to send the engine to Brooke Henry at Vee Two Australia
for overhaul. Brooke brought the engine back to California
after going through it, and I took the bike out to California
and met with him. He re-assembled the engine while I watched
and learned, and we installed it in the frame, fired it up and
he tuned it! I have only ridden the bike about 250 miles since
overhaul, and since I am pushing 70, it needs to be someone
else’s Sunday rider.
The paint on the bike is all original except for the fairing. It
came with a dent in the tank under the right clip-on. It has a
new chain and sprockets, new cush drive in the rear wheel, new
Michelin Activ tires and tubes and it has only run on Avgas
since overhaul. A copy of the overhaul invoice is shown.
Needless to say, the bike runs very well!! It is not a show
bike, nor a hangar queen. It has been a rider since I have owned
it and has the patina to prove it! It is however, a very clean
example of a 1977 900SS, with a new $15K Vee Two buit engine,
and is ready to go where ever someone needs to go!
It has a clean Texas title in the owner's name.
