1980 Ducati SSD Darmah -
SOLD
With age and owning it since
1982, “FOREVER” has arrived. After several years of
thought, I’ve decided to let go. I am the second owner and it
has a clear Oregon title. My overall assessment is that the body
work at 45, obviously has lots of “patina” as it is all
original. Most replaced parts have been saved along with
manuals, brochures, receipts. The engine was
overhauled in 2018 and runs strong although I never got around
to the PHF 32mm carbs and actually planned to send them
down to Bevel Heaven – never happened.
You can be the judge by
reviewing individual body work and engine rebuild photos.
IT HAS NO SHOW AWARDS!
If you
are taking a look at this listing, you probably already know
most of the history, facts and specifications for the DUCATI SSD
DARMAH (it’s 45 years old) and more interested in specifics of
condition for this one. So, in the interest of brevity,
here we go….

HOW IT RUNS
- After the engine rebuild, it ran real strong. Details of
that are listed above. I was taking short rides near home
on the awesome roads here on
Chehalem Mt.
Invariably it seemed to "choke up" and run "ratty" so I took it
back to Dr. John's Duc Shop whereupon he tried to overhaul the
carbs. He detailed the issues and tried to do the
economical fix but to no avail - they are just worn out. I
finally suggested he take 'em off and we send them to out for
the Bevel Heaven rebuild program. Didn't happen - I began
to rethink riding it. I think he was getting tired of it
as well.
WHAT NEEDS
ATTENTION - It is a 43-year-old bike that has ~50k miles and
I have attempted to cover this in detail her. I have photos of
individual body parts with problem areas marked. The worst
part was a battery cover I totaled it, but was able to save all
the parts and put it back together and repaint with light blue
that doesn't really match at all but is functional. There
is also an extra set in DARMAH red that goes with it. The
fairing is whole with a couple of minor fractures. Tail piece
needs a lock, and the seat is re-upholstered. Tank has
some paint wear (tank bag) but is dent and ding free. Any
body part painting should include the rear wheel to complement.
The complete "Hide-It" program would call for a frame repaint.

THE
TOUR OF THE EASTERN FRONT & THE “FOREVER” DARMAH
From an
ancient Ducati International Owners Club newsletter
by John
Foyston
Shop
Manager, EUROSPORT, Inc Tigard, OR
The tour which typically
attracts 20 riders on Ducatis, Guzzis and other machinery began
quite a bit more humbly in 1982 when my buddy Dick decided that
one of the guys he worked with, Rich, was Ducati material even
though, he, Rich was not as yet aware of that fact..
I myself evinced a modicum of
disbelief at this news as Rich was at that time, riding that
great Vanilla Wafer of motorbikes, a scruffy Yamaha 400 4-stroke
twin and he rode it because it was efficient, fast enough,
always worked and it was cheap. Doesn’t sound like yer
average Ducati maniac, RIGHT?
Rich is also probably the most
avid outdoorsman that I know, so the suggestion that he and Dick
saddle up Dick’s Darmah SD and his then, new PANTAH
and head for a weekend in Eastern Oregon met with immediate
approval and of course the journey immediately became legend,
whole segments of which are recounted to this day.
Not only did Rich Shock the hell
out of me by buying a 1980 Darmah SS later that year (a
bike he still ownes and cherishes and will probably own forever)
but the idea of the trip so caught everybody’s imagination that
THE TOUR was born and became an annual event.
